What is DOC Number?

The ID number a state department of corrections assigns to each person it holds, used to look them up and identify them.

A DOC number is the ID a state department of corrections gives each person it holds or supervises. States may call it by different names.

Virginia's locator, for example, lets you search by name or by DOC ID number. Using the number can help avoid mix-ups with people who share a name.

Jails often use their own numbers. Johnson County, Kansas asks for a six-digit Criminal File Number to make a kiosk deposit. Federal prisons use a register number instead. Check the facility's site for which number it needs when you send mail or money.
