A register number is the eight-digit ID number the federal Bureau of Prisons gives each person in its custody.

You will need it often. To send money through MoneyGram or Western Union, the account number is the register number followed right away by your loved one's last name, with no spaces. Money orders mailed to the BOP lockbox must show the register number and full committed name. Funds may be returned if the number is wrong.

The BOP Inmate Locator lets you search by name or by register number.
