What is Reentry?
The return home from jail or prison, plus the programs that help people prepare for work and daily life after release.
Reentry is the move from jail or prison back to the community, along with the planning and programs that support it.
The federal Bureau of Prisons says release preparation begins on the first day of incarceration and ramps up at least 18 months before release. Its program includes classes on résumé writing and job searching, and some people move to a Residential Reentry Center before release. Some may get a release gratuity, clothing or travel money.
Money left in a trust account is returned at release, and some facilities load it onto a release card. Ask the facility how this works.
